Academic results and university destinations
From Virtus to the world.
Destinations
A measure of success for any school or college is always what options are available to their students once they graduate.
At Virtus, the world’s universities are available to our students!
The positive trend of top international university destinations is illustrated by the destinations for our class of 2024, which feature prestigious universities such as Notre Dame (USA), University of Bath (UK).
In line with last year’s success, 100% of our students secured their first or second destination choice of which 60% are in the Times 100 World ranking with the remaining 40% featuring in The Times 200 World ranking.
Consistently, the most sought after destination country is the United Kingdom. The popularity of the UK reflects both the rigorous high quality educational standards which is the trademark of British education, as well as the vast array of opportunities our students secure once they graduate with a British degree. As our students become more discerning customers, their research into both the best universities as well as the best courses for them, lead them to select a wide range of universities. In the last few years many of our students´university destinations feature amongst the high ranking Russell Group universities such as UCL, Kings College London, Loughborough University, University of Bristol, University of Sheffield, University of Edinburgh, University of Manchester, University of Exeter and University of Warwick.
Other universities which are not Russell Group but rather a league of their own are University of St Andrew’s and University of Bath, to name just a few recent examples of top UK destinations.
As always, we are delighted that our students are able to seamlessly access such high quality institutions and continue our British heritage.
Aside from the UK, The Netherlands remains a popular choice as a destination for many of our students. Here, Utrecht, Erasmus Rotterdam, and University of Groeningen have been recent examples of excellent destinations.
Spain, as a destination country, remains a solid choice for a third of our students. Here IE remains the top choice for a wide variety of Engineering and Business degrees at IE University.
So on the measure of success linked to destinations, Virtus continues to offer unrivalled preparation for university!

Grade variance
At Virtus College, the academic journey at the end June 2024 showcased remarkable progress, underscoring the quality of our educational approach. Over this period, we saw a significant increase in our value-added score, gaining a full point, which is a clear indication of the impact our dedicated teaching and personalised support have on student outcomes. This improvement reflects our commitment to fostering an environment where students are not just meeting expectations but are consistently exceeding them.
As a whole school, 45% of students exceed their target grades by one grade or higher.
An incredible 52% of Year 13 managed to obtain one grade of higher than their target grades. This achievement highlights the effectiveness of our strategies in nurturing academic excellence and ensuring that each student reaches their full potential.
At Virtus College, we pride ourselves on creating an educational experience that empowers students to excel beyond their initial targets, making our school a top choice for parents who want to see their children thrive academically.
Understanding the importance of Grade Variance
At Virtus College The British Sixth Form, we monitor students’ progress from the start of Year 12. In order to carefully track their development, students are put on ‘Flight Paths’ which map out their expected progress from their IGCSEs and help to indicate the minimum expected A-Level grade they should achieve when they reach the end of Year 13. This informs our strategy for challenging and supporting students to exceed their potential as we value the growth of each student most.
What is a Flight Path?
It is an estimate of the range of A-Level grades a student should be working towards for the end of Key Stage 5 (Year 13) which is when they sit their final International A-Level examinations.
How do we calculate
the Grade Variance in our data?
This is determined by our Assessment Team using Flight Path data as well as a variety of factors including CAT-4 exam results, internal exams and mock examinations. A statistical analysis of the difference between the minimum expected results and final results is then undertaken to ascertain the final Grade Variance per student and subject. For Virtus, this measure of individual students’ growth beyond expectations is the best indicator of the success of our provision and the difference we make in young peoples’ lives.
