Learning support

A highly personalised approach for every student.

At Virtus, every
student is unique

Each student is different, and our bespoke approach to education helps us meet their needs.

However, a minority of students have significantly different needs and require an adaptive approach. Those students who may have an officially diagnosed learning need, which means that they face extra struggles within and outside the classroom, will require extra support and guidance. Virtus has a highly personalised approach to SEND with extensive provision for a wide range of emotional and learning needs, and each student receives wrap-around care and support through both the academic teaching, the mentoring and the wider curriculum.

Assessment and evaluation

Upon admission to the school (in the case of existing awareness of SEND needs), or upon discovery of a special educational need or disability, there will be a comprehensive assessment of the student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. This will involve gathering information from teachers, parents, and any relevant professionals involved in the student’s education. This will allow the school to identify any specific learning disabilities or challenges the student may face.

Our SENCo (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) liaises with both parents and educational psychologists in order to best understand the needs of each student. This close communication puts the student in the centre of our provision and we adapt accordingly in order to ensure they have the best chance of success.

Provision

The Virtus SENCo produces an Individualised Education Plan (IEP) for each student with diagnosed learning needs. The IEP will help to ensure that students with SEND needs receive appropriate and tailored support that allow them to access the curriculum and make meaningful progress in their learning.

The IEP will allow the relevant parties to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals for the student’s academic and personal development. It will also determine the necessary accommodations and modifications to support the student’s learning needs.
